A joint project of the European Patent Office and the European Union Intellectual Property Office analysed the impact of IP rights on economic performance, innovation, and activity across the EU.
The study covers a broad range of Intellectual Property Rights, trademarks, patents, designs, copyright to name a few.
The study has shown that there has been large economic contribution in sectors such as pharmaceutical and manufacturing, electronic component manufacturing, and electricity production, underlining the close link between innovation, IP protection, and industrial performance.
The study highlights the importance of strong IP systems and access to finance, especially for startups. More than 88% of all private equity and venture capital funding, flowed to start-ups operating in IPR-intensive sectors.
